Background Information
The vocabulary term “bully” has been present since the year of 1693 (DoSomething.org, 2014). Bullying has existed all over the world for centuries now, and is just called something different. In Germany, instead of using the term bully they use the word “psychoterror”. Also, in some Scandinavian countries, they use the term “mobbing” instead of bullying (DoSomething.org, 2014). Although bullying has technically been around since 1693, “bullying was not viewed as a problem until the 1970’s. Until then, many viewed bullying as a childhood rite of passage”.
With more individuals being aware of the bullying and the harm that it causes, many anti-bullying policies have been put in to place all throughout the United States. One program that has been put into place in all schools is the “zero-tolerance policy”. This policy has been put into place to help prevent bullying from hurting more children from the rising problem.
According to Scarpaci (2014) “bullying takes at least two people: bully and victim, bullies like to feel strong and superior, bullies enjoy having power over others, and bullies use their power to hurt people”.
Children bully for a particular reason. According to Sherrow (2011)“in some cases bullying is used to maintain social order and ensure that no one acquires too much dominance, status or personal power. Also according to Sherrow (2011) “in other cases, bullying is harmful and used to injure others physically, emotionally or socially”. Bullying will never be gone completely, but the more society is informed about the problems and effects bullying causes, the more chance there is to help individuals that are affected by it.
According to National Institute of Child and Human Development study (2001) found that it is entirely more common for boys to be the ones doing the bullying rather than girls. It is more common for boys to be bullies and for girls to be victims and “targets of bullying”.
